Blues Guitar Lessons Buying Guide

Blues has been said by many to be the foundation for American music as we know it, and Blues guitar is what makes the genre so powerful.

Whether you like Rock & Roll, Hip Hop, Jazz or Pop radio music, Blues is what has set the stage for the chord changes, progressions and solos we come to expect in all these styles today.

Blues is an emotional genre focused on helping you to stop thinking about things, and just let it all out with the music.

For guitarists, some say the minor pentatonic scales that were perfected by Blues musicians are the root of tons of popular solos we all recognize.

What Makes it Blues Guitar?

Music we classify as “Blues” is typically made up by three key elements:

  1. Chord Changes: Tonic, Subdominant and Dominant (1-4-5 structure)
  2. Measures: 12-bar pattern for riffs and solos
  3. Lyrics: Repeat one line twice, then follow up with another (AAB style of poetry)

One of my favorite parts about Blues is the guitar solos! Who doesn’t love a good old fashioned Blues solo?

History of the Blues

BB King

Based primarily in the United States, inspired by African and African American spiritual and folk songs, Blues really started to take shape in the early 1900’s.

As the style grew in popularity with artists like Louis Armstrong bringing it to more urban settings, Blues quickly became a nationwide sensation.

Then, America saw another evolution in the genre with incredible Blues guitarists like Buddy Guy and B.B. King coming to the forefront and dominating the scene in the 50’s.

By the time it really took off, the 60’s altered the state of music completely, but luckily guys like Eric Clapton were so heavily influenced by the Blues guitar gods before them that they continued to carry Blues to a new level.

In the 21st century, we have guitarists like John Mayer and Keith Urban drawing inspiration from all of these greats to form interested new hybrid styles.

Why Take Blues Guitar Lessons?

To this day, many guitar teachers recommend learning Blues before any other style, because it provides a rich learning experience, and can be applied to a wide variety of styles.

Once you master the fundamentals of Blues, you’ll be able to play tons of songs and solos with ease.
